King Ahaz of Judah began a relationship with Assyria to ward off his northern invaders, but he soon found that keeping Assyria happy required a reconfiguration of his other relationships – including his relationship with God. This is the binding nature of relationships – they each require faithfulness to their own terms, but they also each exert an influence on all the others.
